The Department of Public Safety is accepting applications for the 105th Trooper School. This school is contingent on approval of anticipated funding. It is anticipated that the 105th Trooper school will begin August 5, 2018. The department has immediate staffing needs statewide. All assignments will be made based on the operational needs of the department, taking into consideration the current home location of the selected applicants.

APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR THE 105th TROOPER SCHOOL IS SUNDAY, MARCH 4, 2018.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Under close supervision, patrols highways and roads to enforce traffic and criminal laws. Investigates traffic crashes and provides assistance to motorists. Assists other law enforcement agencies in enforcing traffic and criminal laws, and ensuring safety of the general population. Participates in criminal prosecution. DPS offers a number of opportunities for specialized assignments for Troopers throughout their career.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, possess a diploma from an accredited high school or G.E.D, and must be 21 years old upon graduation from Trooper School.
Applicants must also successfully pass the pre-employment process which includes the background investigation and polygraph, oral interview, physical fitness test, psychological and medical evaluations, and meet other requirements for certification as a peace officer set by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.).

ANNUAL SALARY
$36,110 (while in Trooper School)
$46,422 (upon Trooper School graduation)

Trooper First Class 1- $51,552

Trooper First Class 2- $56,707

Trooper First Class 3 - $61,825

TROOPER CADET PROGRAM - For candidates who are interested in employment with DPS prior to Trooper School, please carefully read the following information.

We anticipate hiring Cadets to be employed at Georgia State Patrol Posts prior to the start of the 105thTrooper School. Salary for Trooper Cadet is $34,392.00 annually.

Eligibility consists of the following:

  • Must be an applicant for the 105th Trooper School
  • Must successfully pass polygraph, background investigation, and interview for the Cadet Program

Candidates selected for the Cadet Program will be employed while continuing in the process for the 105th Trooper School. We anticipate a limited number of available positions and interested candidates are encouraged to attend PT as early in the process as possible. This opportunity will be available pending funding approval and until the positions are filled. More information on this opportunity will be provided at the PT session.

Please note: Candidates for the 105th Trooper School are not required to participate in the Cadet Program to be eligible for selection to the 105th Trooper School.

VETERAN’S BENEFITS
Eligible veterans for GI Bill benefits can receive 18 months’ worth of stipend pay from the Veteran’s Administration in addition to the salary paid by DPS while in the academy and during on the job training after graduation. The current OJT rates vary by which GI Bill the veteran selects and time of service.

PHYSICAL FITNESS STANDARDS: The Physical Fitness Program is an evaluation of absolute standards (same job = same standard).  These standards are based upon Cooper Institute standards reflective of the minimum fitness level an individual must possess to perform their job regardless of their age or gender.  The following events will comprise the assessment:

Please note that these are the minimum standards for consideration for employment. The Trooper School cadets will be required to be at a much higher level of fitness which includes long distance running for cardiovascular endurance.  It is highly suggested that applicants implement physical training programs that will prepare them to far exceed the minimum requirements listed above.

MEDICAL STANDARDS: Minimum vision of 20/60 uncorrected in each eye, and corrected to 20/40 or better in both eyes with glasses or contact lenses. Additional medical standards must be met prior to final offer of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

·       Prior military service

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) is unable to reimburse other law enforcement agencies for training expenses as defined by § 35-8-22. Therefore, DPS has determined that any currently certified peace officer as defined in § 35-8-2 will not be considered for employment with DPS until at least 24 months after the completion of basic mandate training as of August 5, 2018 (the tentative hire date for the 105th Trooper School). This will not apply to candidates who were not employed by another Georgia law enforcement agency while completing basic mandate training. We strongly encourage you to re-apply once you have worked for your current agency for 24 months after completion of mandate training.
