(ATLANTA)--The Georgia State Patrol is encouraging motorists to begin planning now for summer travel and summer heat, especially the toll they take on your motor vehicle.  Colonel Bill Hitchens, GSP Commander, said an improperly maintained vehicle can leave you stranded not only on the long vacation trips but even on routine daily trips due to the high summer temperatures in Georgia.

"Preparing now can greatly reduce the chances of you being stranded as the weather gets warmer," Colonel Hitchens said.  "Check your car or have it serviced by a qualified technician to make sure the tires are properly inflated, belts and hoses are not worn, and that all fluids are fresh and filled to the proper levels."  Colonel Hitchens also pointed out that the vehicle safety checks should include a check of your vehicle's spare tire.

State Troopers also encourage motorists to carefully plan their vacation trips in advance.  "Allow yourself plenty of time to reach your destination and build into your travel schedule frequent breaks - at least every two hours," Colonel Hitchens said.  "Allow yourself extra time for traffic delays along the way."

Colonel Hitchens reminds drivers to make sure their seat belts are in proper working condition.  "For drivers who transport small children, take the time to make sure child safety seats and booster seats are properly installed," he said.

Troopers remind drivers to obey the posted speed limit at all times, make sure everyone is wearing a seat belt and that children are properly restrained.  Most important, designated drivers should be used if alcohol consumption will be in your plans.
