On December 20, 1940, Corporal Black was shot and killed during a traffic stop on State Route 41 near Ringgold. He was the first and only Georgia State Trooper who has lost his life during a vehicle stop. After his death, Corporal Black was promoted to the rank of sergeant by then Commissioner Lon Sullivan; “in testimony of his tireless efforts in behalf of safety of human beings on streets and highways and his valiant courage in fulfilling his oath to enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Georgia.
