Georgia Troopers Join Operation C.A.R.E. for All-American Buckle-Up Week

May 19, 2008

(ATLANTA) - With the Memorial Day holiday weekend less than a week away, the Georgia State Patrol is joining law enforcement agencies across the nation this week for All-American Buckle-Up Week.  The enforcement and education effort begins tonight at 6 p.m. and will continue until midnight Monday, Memorial Day.  The program is sponsored by Operation C.A.R.E., or Combined Accident Reduction Effort.

Colonel Bill Hitchens, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, said Georgia State Troopers and Officers with the Department's Motor Carrier Compliance Division would be participating in the nationwide effort to increase seat belt use.  "Our troopers and officers are making seat belt enforcement a priority this week," Colonel Hitchens said.  "All-American Buckle-Up Week is important because the Memorial Day holiday weekend marks the start of the summer travel season."

Although rising gasoline prices may restrict some long-distance motor vehicle travel, the Georgia State Patrol is still expecting heavy traffic for the holiday period.  "We anticipate seeing an increase in local travel as more people stay closer to home for the holiday weekend," Colonel Hitchens said.  "While the Department of Public Safety is working to reduce expenses for gasoline, State Troopers and Motor Carrier Compliance Officers will be parked in highly visible locations throughout the week, prepared to take enforcement action."

The Commissioner said traffic safety programs like All-American Buckle-Up Week use education and enforcement to promote safe driving habits.  "By promoting safe driving, we are ultimately saving lives," Colonel Hitchens noted.  "We want everyone traveling in Georgia to have a safe and enjoyable summer but also make travel safety a priority."

Operation C.A.R.E. is a nationwide traffic safety initiative that began in 1977 and includes state highway patrol and state police agencies from all 50 states and Canada.  All-American Buckle-Up Week is the first of six Operation C.A.R.E. holiday enforcement periods of the year.
