Johnny Jones Appointed Commanding Officer of MCCD

Colonel Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, has announced the promotion of Johnny Jones to the rank of Major and his appointment as Commanding Office of the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD).  As Commanding Officer, he oversees commercial vehicle safety and size and weight law enforcement operations statewide, which includes overseeing 10 MCCD Regions and 19 inspection stations located throughout the state. He also oversees the Division’s School Bus Safety Program and Regulatory Compliance Unit.

Major Jones began his law enforcement career in 1981 with the Tifton Police Department; the same year he graduated from the 46th Session of the ABAC Regional Police Academy.  Later he served with the Tift County Sheriff’s Department and the Omega Police Department.  In 1988, he joined the Georgia Public Service Commission’s (PSC) Law Enforcement Division.  In 2001, by an Act of the Georgia Legislature, the law enforcement unit of the PSC was transferred to the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Safety (DMVS).  By a subsequent act of the Legislature, in 2005 the Unit became a Division in the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

During his career he served as Region Commander in Region 8 (Southwest Georgia), Regulatory Compliance Section Commander (Headquarters), and MCCD Executive Officer (Headquarters).  He has also participated in numerous special law enforcement details including the 1996 Olympic Games and the 2004 30th G-8 Summit at Sea Island, GA.

Major Jones received his Associates of Science degree in Business Administration from Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, GA, his Bachelors of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State University, and his Masters of Science degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University.

Major Jones is also a GILEE (Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange) graduate, having participated in the 22nd annual peer-to-peer public safety training exchange to Israel.  He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Class 233) and Columbus State University’s Georgia Law Enforcement Command College (Class 8).

He was born and raised in Omega, Georgia and now resides in Tifton with his wife Wanda.  They have four children and five grandchildren.
