Job Description:

Provides installation, programming, troubleshooting, and repair of data communications and telecommunications equipment

Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards:

1.Assists in the installation, maintenance, and support of communications and network equipment

2.Designs work projects, such as analysis of systems, cabling, equipment installation/updates or feature changes, new system installation, etc

3.Initiates and tracks trouble calls from communications equipment and networks

4.Installs, programs, troubleshoot and repairs equipment

5.May respond to after hour's trouble calls

6.Monitors data communications systems and/or service orders to ensure efficient operation and availability to all customers

7.Performs configurations, diagnostic testing of network and non-network problems

8.Performs initialization, configuration and preparation of data communication equipment to the network

9.Plans and coordinates multi-faceted installation/relocation projects May assign or monitor work of contractors and other project staff

10.Resolves hardware/software problems and performs maintenance for telecommunication systems

11.Creates and maintains a high performance environment characterized by positive leadership and a strong team orientation. (Performed by all incumbents)

12.Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field and applies pertinent new knowledge to performance of other responsibilities. (Performed by all incumbents)

Sample Technical Competencies:

1.Knowledge of computer, network operations, telecommunications and maintenance

2.Ability to read technical manuals, confer with users, or to investigate and resolve problems or to provide technical assistance and support

3.Ability to coordinate testing with customers, vendors and others to ensure problem resolution

4.Ability to perform problem analysis using standardized tests

5.Ability to test data circuits to ensure transmission of data information and network efficiency

6.Ability to diagnose problems and provide resolutions

Entry Qualifications:

Completion of a high school diploma or GED AND Two years of experience in the installation and/or repair of computers, communications, and/or technical equipment in the area of assignment OR Completion of technical school program in electronic technology, computer technology, or telecommunications technology AND One year of experience in the area of assignment OR One year of experience at the equivalent of the lower level (ITT020)

Preferred Qualifications:

1.       Knowledge of the design, purpose and operation of the Georgia Interoperability Network (GIN).

2.       Certification as a Communications Technician by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Office of Emergency Communications (DHS/OEC).

3.       Experience in developing and implementing communications projects for a statewide or multi-state organization.
