Physical Fitness Assessment
The Physical Fitness Program is an evaluation of absolute standards (same job = same standard). The standards are based upon Cooper Institute standards reflective of the minimum fitness level an individual must possess to perform their job regardless of their age or gender. The physical fitness assessment is for Trooper/Officer positions only.
The following events will comprise the assessment along with the minimum standard that must be met:

Push Ups
(#) 21 in 1 minute (rest in the up position)

1.5 Mile Run
OR
2000-meter Row
RUN - You will be required to run 1.5 miles within 15 minutes and 34 Seconds (15:34)
ROW - You will be required to complete a 2000-meter row and achieve a targeted VO2 max of at least 50%. The damper setting on the side of the Concept 2 Rower will be set to “5”. The time each individual must complete the 2000-meter row to achieve the 50% VO2 max standard is determined by their weight, age, and gender.

Note: Rowing will only be available at events held at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC).

Please note: These are the minimum standards for consideration for employment. The Trooper Academy will require cadets to be at a much higher level of fitness. It is highly suggested that applicants implement physical training programs that will prepare them to well exceed the minimum requirements listed above.

Polygraph Examination
You must complete and pass the polygraph exam before moving on to the next step in the hiring process.

Background Investigation
Employment in law enforcement agencies involves public trust. Only those persons whose conduct, character and behavior does not discredit either themselves or the Department of Public Safety (DPS) will be employed. The DPS employment process will address the integrity, ethical conduct, honesty, prejudices, financial responsibility, and past behavior of all applicants.

Oral Interview
For some positions, the oral interview is conducted before the polygraph.

The psychological evaluation is for Trooper / Officer positions only.

Medical Evaluation / Drug Screening
The medical evaluation / drug screening is for Trooper / Officer positions only.

P.O.S.T. Application & Approval
The Peace Officers Standards & Training Council (P.O.S.T) application and approval is for Trooper / Officer positions only.
