PAYGRADE: 10                ENTRY SALARY: $28,634

Description of Duties:  Under immediate supervision and within a progressive training capacity, acquires knowledge and experience necessary to enforce applicable State and Federal laws, rules and regulations governing commercial motor vehicle and the transportation of hazardous materials.  Operates and monitors electronic equipment at an inspection facility.  Must successfully complete the basic course prescribed by Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) for law enforcement officers.  Upon successful completion of P.O.S.T. Mandate Training and becoming P.O.S.T. certified as a Law Enforcement Officer; checks commercial motor vehicles for appropriate registration, fuel tax permits, over dimensional permits, and bills of lading; enforces state laws with special emphasis on statutes relating to the operation of commercial vehicles on public roads.  Exercises the powers generally authorized by the State of Georgia for law enforcement officers when in the performance of assigned duties as specified in O.C.G.A. 35-2-101.  Receive instruction in the use of portable scales and other equipment to detect and identify commercial motor vehicle violations in an assigned geographical area, utilizing portable scales and other equipment to detect and identify commercial motor vehicle violations.  Receive instruction in monitoring traffic and enforcing laws pertaining to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes through designed areas.

Qualifications: Applicants must meet the legal requirements for peace officers prescribed by the Georgia Peace officer Standards and Training Council.  Training and experience leading to demonstrated competence needed to perform work of routine difficulty as a member of a team engaged in weighing, measuring and inspecting trucks and other heavy equipment.  Possess the ability to read and understand materials, primarily of alpha-numerical data or short entries, such as tags, licenses and permits; to fill out forms; to spell correctly and legibly print or write letters, numbers and symbols; to follow oral and/or written instructions as provided by supervisors and administrative personnel; to communicate with other enforcement officers, department personnel and general public; to perform basic calculations such as: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or compute percentages; to recall information; to perform repetitive tasks over a long period of time; to operate all radio systems, computer and equipment used at inspection locations, including portable and electronic equipment; to locate roads, towns, counties and routes on road maps; to learn proper use of the chain of command; to work a flexible schedule; to effectively deal with other enforcement officers, supervisors, general public and violators.  Possess the physical strength and agility necessary to perform the core responsibilities of the job.  Display a high level of initiative toward work and demonstrate responsible behavior.  Display high standards of moral and ethical conduct, and maintain a professional image.  Must be 18 years of age or older, possess a valid drivers license, a citizen of the United States, possess a high school diploma or equivalent and pass a written State Merit System examination for a MCCD Cadet.
