The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) oversees the day-to-day operation of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). The mission of the Department is to work cooperatively with all levels of government to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors to our state.

 

Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and highly organized Facilities Maintenance Engineer 1 to ensure prompt response to maintenance needs and emergency issues in the southern region of the state. Under supervision, the Facilities Maintenance Engineer 1 will learn to plan, implement, and monitor facility maintenance programs to include construction and repair, general maintenance tasks, and preventive maintenance.

 

The Facilities Maintenance Engineer 1 is responsible for performing routine maintenance and repair tasks across building systems to ensure a safe, clean, and operational environment. This role supports preventive and corrective maintenance of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, and structural systems in accordance with organizational standards and safety regulations. Good communication skills are important.  Must have the ability to communicate well with county and municipal administers, other state agencies, and contractors and vendors. 

 

The Facilities Maintenance Engineer 1 is tailored to attract candidates from Laurens, Bleckley, Dodge, Treutlen, Pulaski, Wilcox, Ben Hill, Montgomery, Wheeler, Telfair, Jeff Davis, Appling, Toombs, Tattnall, and Evans Counties in Georgia. This position will require travel to various locations across the state, including to DPS Headquarters in Atlanta as needed.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts field reviews to inspect and assure compliance to maintenance and construction policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Confirms that work is performed in accordance with all applicable guidelines and established practices.
  • Monitors work of vendors/contractors and ensures that construction projects are completed within established guidelines.
  • Interprets blueprints and drawings.
  • Performs maintenance, construction, renovation, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repair activities.
  • Prepares specifications for new or renovated structures.
  • Reviews plans and specifications and conducts on-site inspections.

 

 

Qualifications

Associate degree in a related field from an accredited college or university; or two (2) years of job-related experience in engineering, maintenance, renovation, and construction of facilities.

 

 

Skills & Competencies:

  • Basic understanding of building systems and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manuals, and technical documents is a plus.

 

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and perform physical activities such as climbing ladders, bending, and standing for long periods.
  • Comfortable working in varying indoor and outdoor environments, sometimes in adverse conditions.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1–2 years of experience in facilities maintenance or a related trade (e.g., HVAC, electrical, plumbing) preferred.
