 The Department of Public Safety is accepting applications for the 111th Trooper School. This school is contingent on approval of anticipated funding. It is anticipated that the 111th Trooper school will begin August 29, 2021. The department has immediate staffing needs statewide. All assignments will be made based on the operational needs of the department, taking into consideration the current home location of the selected applicants.

 DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Under close supervision, patrols highways and roads to enforce traffic and criminal laws. Investigates traffic crashes and assists motorists. Assists other law enforcement agencies in enforcing traffic and criminal laws and ensuring safety of the general population. Participates in criminal prosecution. DPS offers a number of opportunities for specialized assignments for Troopers throughout their career.

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, possess a diploma from an accredited high school or G.E.D, and must be 21 years old upon graduation from Trooper School.
Applicants must also successfully pass the pre-employment process that includes the background investigation and polygraph, oral interview, physical fitness test, psychological and medical evaluations, and meet other requirements for certification as a peace officer set by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.).

 ANNUAL SALARY: 
$36,832 (while in Trooper School)
$47,350 (upon Trooper School graduation)

TROOPER CAREER PATH: 

Trooper First Class 1- $52,583

Trooper First Class 2- $57,841

Trooper First Class 3- $63,062

 

 

 

NOTE: The DPS Uniform and Appearance Policy has changed to allow applicants with some visible tattoos in a short sleeve uniform shirt to wear a long sleeve shirt.

 

Applicants with tattoos or brands will be disqualified for either of the following:

  1. Tattoos/brands that depict or support criminal behavior, drug usage, nudity, profanity, promiscuity, subversive groups, bigotry, etc.
  2. Tattoos/brands on the neck, face, head, hands, and fingers that are visible while on duty and/or in a long sleeve uniform shirt.  Tattoos on the arm must not be below the crease of the wrist. Exceptions include tattoos/brands that are covered by one ring per hand, or by a watch band on either the left or right wrist. Uniform members with tattoos visible in a short sleeve uniform shirt (generally, below the crease of the arm and tip of the elbow) will wear the class A uniform (long sleeve shirt). 

VETERAN’S BENEFITS: 
Eligible veterans for GI Bill benefits can receive 18 months’ worth of stipend pay from the Veteran’s Administration in addition to the salary paid by DPS while in the academy and during on the job training after graduation. The current OJT rates vary by which GI Bill the veteran selects and time of service.

 

PHYSICAL FITNESS STANDARDS: The Physical Fitness Program is an evaluation of absolute standards (same job = same standard).  These standards are based upon Cooper Institute standards reflective of the minimum fitness level an individual must possess to perform their job regardless of their age or gender. 

 

Please note that these are the minimum standards for consideration for employment. The Trooper School cadets will be required to be at a much higher level of fitness, which includes long distance running for cardiovascular endurance.  It is highly suggested that applicants implement physical training programs that will prepare them to exceed the minimum requirements listed below.

Candidates who choose to row must adhere to the following:

 

·        You will be required to complete a 2000-meter row and achieve a targeted VO2 max of at least 50%.

·        The damper setting on the side of the Concept 2 Rower will be set to “5”.

·        The time each individual must complete the 2000-meter row to achieve the 50% VO2 max standard is determined by their weight, age, and gender.

MEDICAL STANDARDS: Minimum vision of 20/60 uncorrected in each eye, and corrected to 20/40 or better in both eyes with glasses or contact lenses. Additional medical standards must be met prior to final offer of employment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

·       Prior military service

·       Prior experience as a Law Enforcement Officer

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) is unable to reimburse other law enforcement agencies for training expenses as defined by § 35-8-22. Therefore, DPS has determined that any currently certified peace officer as defined in § 35-8-2 will not be considered for employment with DPS until at least 24 months after the completion of basic mandate training as August 29, 2021 (the tentative hire date for the 111th Trooper School). This will not apply to candidates who were not employed by another Georgia law enforcement agency while completing basic mandate training. We strongly encourage you to re-apply once you have worked for your current agency for 24 months after completion of mandate training.
