MCCD CAREER PATH:

  • MCCD Officer Cadet- $44,080
  • MCO1 - $56,900 (upon completion of POST certification)
  • MCO2 - $60,344 annually (NAS I A & B Training and 18 months service as a Compliance Officer I)
  • MCO3 - $66,836 annually (Basic HAZMAT, Cargo Tank and Bulk Packaging Training and 4 years of total sworn service)
  • Senior MCCD Officer- $69,627
  • Master MCCD Officer- $72,559

MOTOR CARRIER COMPLIANCE OFFICER

If so, the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) is hiring capable, competent professionals who possess the ability to interpret and enforce complex laws, rules, and regulations specific to commercial vehicle and driver safety.

Ensuring that commercial motor carriers, vehicles, drivers operate safely on Georgia’s highways is a vital part of the Georgia Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) commitment to increasing highway safety in Georgia.

We offer:

Ø Take home patrol cars.

Ø You may use your patrol car to commute as long as you live within 50 air miles of the region territory.

Ø The ability to patrol primarily in any of the counties listed in this announcement considering region needs.

Duties & Responsibilities: Under immediate supervision and within a progressive training capacity, acquires knowledge and experience necessary to enforce applicable State and Federal laws, rules and regulations governing commercial motor vehicle and the transportation of hazardous materials. Operates and monitors electronic equipment at an inspection facility. DPS offers a number of opportunities for specialized assignments for Motor Carrier Compliance Officers throughout their career.

This position requires successful completion of a 12 Week Advanced Academy and 12 Weeks of Field Training.

- Inspects commercial motor vehicles for appropriate registration, fuel tax permits, over dimensional permits, and bills of lading;
- Enforces state laws with special emphasis on statutes relating to the operation of commercial vehicles on public roads.
- Exercises the powers generally authorized by the State of Georgia for law enforcement officers when in the performance of assigned duties as specified in O.C.G.A. 35-2-101.
- Receives instruction in the use of portable scales and other equipment to detect and identify commercial motor vehicle violations in an assigned geographical area, utilizing portable scales and other equipment to detect and identify commercial motor vehicle violations.
- Receives instruction in monitoring traffic and enforcing laws pertaining to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes through designated areas

MCCD Law Enforcement Officers routinely:

  • Patrol highways and roadways to enforce Georgia’s traffic and criminal laws as they relate to commercial vehicle and driver safety;
  • Perform safety compliance inspections of commercial vehicles, drivers, and shipments of hazardous materials.
  • Assist in the investigation of traffic crashes involving commercial motor vehicles;
  • Utilize portable and permanent scales to screen commercial vehicles for violations of the state’s weight and dimension laws;
  • As assigned, enforce state laws pertaining to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) and High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes in designated areas of the state.

· Provide public outreach and education to motor carriers, drivers, and the motoring public on commercial vehicle safety.

NOTE: The DPS Uniform and Appearance Policy has changed to allow applicants with some visible tattoos in a short sleeve uniform shirt to wear a long sleeve shirt.

Applicants with tattoos or brands will be disqualified for either of the following:

  1. Tattoos/brands that depict or support criminal behavior, drug usage, nudity, profanity, promiscuity, subversive groups, bigotry, etc.
  2. Tattoos/brands on the neck, face, head, hands, and fingers that are visible while on duty and/or in a long sleeve uniform shirt. Tattoos on the arm must not be below the crease of the wrist. Exceptions include tattoos/brands that are covered by one ring per hand, or by a watch band on either the left or right wrist. Uniform members with tattoos visible in a short sleeve uniform shirt (generally, below the crease of the arm and tip of the elbow) will wear the class A uniform (long sleeve shirt).

As a POST certified peace officer, please carefully read the following:

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) is unable to reimburse other law enforcement agencies for training expenses as defined by § 35-8-22. Therefore, DPS has determined that any currently certified peace officer as defined by §35-8-2 will not be hired by DPS until at least 24 months after the completion of basic mandate training. This will not apply to candidates who were not employed by another Georgia law enforcement agency while completing basic mandate training. Applicants for Motor Carrier Compliance Officer must have worked for their current agency for at least 22 months after the completion of mandate training before they will be allowed to participate in a PT session.

Veteran’s Benefits:
Eligible veterans for GI Bill benefits can receive 24 months’ worth of stipend pay from the Veteran’s Administration in addition to the salary paid by DPS while in the academy and during on the job training after graduation. The current OJT rates vary by which GI Bill the veteran selects and time of service.

Minimum Training & Experience: Applicant must be 20 years of age or older, possess a valid driver's license, a citizen of the United States; possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Must be POST certified as a Peace Officer.

Applicants must successfully pass the pre-employment hiring process which includes completion of background/polygraph investigation, panel interview and psychological/medical evaluation. Cadets must also meet other requirements for certification as a peace officer set forth by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.).

Physical Fitness Standards: The Physical Fitness Program is an evaluation based on the recommendation of the Cooper's Institute in terms of absolute standards (same job = same standard). These standards are reflective of the minimum fitness level an individual must possess to perform their job regardless of their age or gender.
