Motor Carrier Compliance Officers Focus on Unsafe Driving Behavior During Operation Save Driver Week

(ATLANTA) – The Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is participating in Operation Safe Driver Week, July 12-18, which focuses on commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers engaging in unsafe driving behaviors with an emphasis on speeding.

During Operation Safe Driver Week, MCCD Officers will issue warnings and/or citations to CMV drivers who practice unsafe driving behaviors, such as speeding.

As traffic on the roadways decreased in March and April, average speeds, measured during the first week of April, increased significantly. To address this alarming trend of increased speeding on our roadways during the pandemic, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) selected speeding as the focus area for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week.

"In addition to a focus on speeding, MCCD will track distracted driving, failure to use a seatbelt, following too closely, improper lane change, reckless or aggressive driving, failure to obey traffic control devices, evidence of impaired driving and other dangerous driver behaviors during Operation Safe Driver Week," stated Major Jeremy Vickery, Commanding Officer of DPS Motor Carrier Compliance Division.

The primary focus of the Motor Carrier Compliance Division is the enhancement of highway safety regarding commercial motor vehicles. This includes educating CMV drivers and the motoring public about unsafe driving behavior.
