(ATLANTA)—A traffic stop for speeding Tuesday afternoon in Troup County led to the seizure of more than $540,000 in currency that was hidden in buckets of roofing tar.  An investigation into the origin of the money is continuing by the Georgia State Patrol and the Troup County Sheriff’s Department.

A Georgia State Trooper stopped the pick-up truck carrying the five gallon buckets of tar for speeding on Interstate 85 around 2 p.m. Tuesday.  During the course of the traffic stop, troopers   found the money during a consent search of the vehicle.  A check of one bucket revealed several bundles of money concealed in the tar.

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed 52 bundles of cash totaling more than $544,000.  The two occupants of the truck denied knowledge of the money and have not been charged.
