Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) oversees the day-to-day operation of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD).

The Payroll Office serves as the liaison for the Department of Public Safety to the employees of the department and the attached agencies. The Payroll Office is responsible for maintaining all payroll related reports and processing payroll twice a month.

We currently have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Payroll Specialist 1 in the Payroll Office.

Responsibilities include:

·       Collects, codes, verifies and processes payroll information and related transactions.

·       Answers questions from customers, government agencies and payroll administration companies; maintains records and files; and provides technical support to assigned area.

·       Enters, processes/transmits and proofs payroll data.

A typical workday may include but is not limited to the following activities:

o   Entering information for all annual leave and holiday leave payouts as necessary.

o   Entering hours for all hourly employees each pay period when timesheets are received.

o   Entering all overtime hours to be paid.

o   Ensuring that all personnel entries are correct in system and making any and all payroll corrections when errors are discovered.

o   Entering deductions for all employees each pay period.

o   Balancing payroll data entered into Teamworks to payroll report.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in a business related field from an accredited college or university OR Associate's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university OR Two years of payroll or related accounting experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience in Microsoft Excel
  • Reconciliation Experience
  • Peoplesoft HCM Experience
  • State of Georgia payroll experience
