Trooper Application and Employment Process

To apply for a Trooper position and initiate the employment process, interested candidates must complete a State of Georgia application for employment (list job code 17706), a  Background Packet and the GA Work Ready Assessment. All applications and required documents MUST be submitted at the same time.  

1. APPLICATION

Applicants must complete a State of Georgia application for employment (list job code 17706).

2.  GA WORK READY ASSESSMENT

The GA Work Ready Assessment Program tests your abilities and skills in 3 areas: Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information. Applicants must achieve a SILVER or higher level certificate prior to applying for a Trooper position. (click here for detailed information and testing locations, dates and times).

Special Note to Out of State Applicants - The Work Ready Assessment is offered in most states.  Visit the WorkKeys website http://www.workkeys.org to find the assessment provider nearest you.  Applicants must receive a level score of 4 (four) or higher in each of the following three assessments: Applied Mathematics, Reading for Informaton and Locating Information.  Please check with the provider as some assessment fees may apply.

4.  BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION

Applicants must complete a  Background Packet. Employment in law enforcement agencies involves public trust.  Only those persons whose conduct, character and behavior which does not discredit either themselves or the Department of Public Safety (DPS) will be employed.  The DPS employment process will address the integrity, ethical conduct, honesty, prejudices, financial responsibility (credit), and past behavior of all applicants. click here to view the employment disqualifiers

5.  PHYSICAL FITNESS ASSESSMENT

The Physical Fitness Program is an evaluation based on the recommendation of the Cooper's Institute in terms of absolute standards (same job = same standard).  The standards are reflective of the minimum fitness level and individual must possess to perform their job regardless of their age or gender.  The following events will comprise the assessment:

Please note that these are the minimum standards for consideration for employment. The Trooper Academy will require cadets to be at a much higher level of fitness. It is highly suggested that applicants implement physical training programs that will prepare them to well exceed the minimum requirements listed above.

9.  MEDICAL SCREENING (HEARING AND VISION STANDARDS)

Vision: minimum vision of 20/60 uncorrected in each eye, and corrected to 20/40 or better in both eyes with glasses or contact lenses. Additional medical standards must be met prior to final offer of employment.

10.  DRUG SCREENING
