Salary Range:  Up to $78,720.15.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police, and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). We currently have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Deputy Manager, within the Legal Division. The Legal Division assists the Commissioner and employees of the Department in matters associated with the daily operations of the Department and serves as the primary liaison with the Office of the Attorney General.

The available position is for a Deputy Manager of the Department’s Open Records Unit and will report to the Attorney Manager, who reports to the Legal Director.  This position is perfect for a candidate with prior management and government experience, who seeks a challenging opportunity to work on a wide variety of issues that impact public safety.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assists and supports the Attorney Manager of the Department’s Open Records Unit within the Legal Division, for handling a high volume of open records requests.
  • Provides good analysis and working, effective knowledge of the Georgia Open Records Act.
  • Oversees and assists with locating, gathering, and tracking of requested records from the Department’s statewide divisions and units to ensure a timely, accurate, and complete response.
  • Undertakes and supports training of Unit employees.
  • Performs daily checks of subordinate work for managing the number and complexity of requests expected of subordinates, work productivity, and reassignment of requests based upon proficiency and skill levels.
  • Oversees administrative supervision, including review of employee attendance, leave requests, timesheets, and oversight of phone and mail rotation systems, as needed.  
  • Conducts accurate legal analysis to ensure Unit redaction of all information that is protected according to state and federal law. Such records include paper documents, electronic files, photographs, videos, and audio files.
  • Responds to and provides effective problem-solving practices and skilled communications for difficult requests and difficult requestors, as elevated to management from Unit employees.
  • Serves as a resource for complaints of internal and external customers concerning open records issues.
  • Assists in fostering and maintaining a respectful and inclusive team environment.
  • Handles more complex and sensitive requests, non-party discovery, and litigation subpoenas, while identifying potential problems and seeking any necessary guidance and protection afforded by the Georgia Attorney General’s Office.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in operations management, business administration, or a related field which includes two (2) years in a managerial or supervisory role or six (6) years of related professional experience which includes two (2) years in a managerial or supervisory role; or an equivalent combination of knowledge, education, job or intern experience, training, or certifications that provides the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully perform the job at the level listed may be substituted year-over-year. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with state government structure and operations
  • Management of employees
  • More than one year of experience in one or more areas:  legal, administrative, or government agency work
