ATLANTA, GA—The Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) of the Georgia Department of Public Safety will be participating in Operation Safe Driver Week during the week of Oct. 15-21, 2017. Safe Driver Week is an annual traffic enforcement initiative aimed at identifying unsafe driving behaviors by commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and passenger-carrying vehicle drivers in an effort to reduce the number of deaths caused by dangerous driving behaviors.

Georgia ranks fourth in the nation for fatal crashes involving commercial motor vehicles.  “The Department of Public Safety is firmly committed to providing a safer transportation environment in Georgia by implementing strategies and traffic enforcement initiatives like Operation Safe Driver Week, that can reduce crashes and provide a safer transportation experience for motorists traveling on our roadways,” said Major Johnny Jones, MCCD Commander.

During the week, motor carrier compliance officers will be keeping an eye out for CMV drivers who are speeding, texting, driving fatigued, distracted, aggressive, and unrestrained. In addition, officers will be inspecting commercial vehicles and their drivers at inspection sites and on the roadside. Major Jones said, “Our officers will not hesitate to issue out of service orders and citations to drivers found to be a safety hazard.” MCCD officers will also be handing out education materials to drivers regarding safe driving behaviors.

Operation Safe Driver Week is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. The initiative was created to help to combat the number of traffic fatalities resulting from crashes involving large trucks, buses, and cars.
